The 24th Seville Flamenco Biennial will officially begin on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 with an opening very different from a conventional gala. There will be no front-facing theatre stage: the Plaza de San Francisco will become an immersive performance space where voices emerge from the balconies and dance occupies the centre of the square.

This selection helps explain the title Ecos primitivos. It is not conceived as a journey through the most festive or popular palos, but as a search for forms connected with oral storytelling, work, the forge, transmission and invocation.
While the voices occupy the balconies, Ana Morales will concentrate the physical dimension of the opening on the ground of Plaza de San Francisco. Her dance will not be an ornamental accompaniment to the cante: the choreography is conceived as the bodily response to the voices arriving from above.
The organisers describe her approach through three principles: organic, bodily movement, fragmentation and reconstruction of gesture and a direct relationship with the ground as a symbolic space.
That approach fits Morales’s own career, in which she has continuously explored the relationship between flamenco tradition, contemporary language, space and the body. Here the contrast will be especially visible: the cante will remain elevated around the audience while the dance is inscribed onto the paving of the square.

There will therefore be no single privileged viewpoint equivalent to a central theatre seat. The experience will depend partly on where each spectator stands in the square and on how the voices travel acoustically between the façades.
Choosing Plaza de San Francisco reinforces the intention to turn Seville into the Biennial’s stage. It is one of the great historic spaces in the city centre, beside the City Hall and directly connected with Plaza Nueva and Avenida de la Constitución.
In Ecos primitivos, the façades and balconies will not merely serve as scenery. The architecture will make it possible to build the performance vertically and distribute the voices around the audience. In this way, an everyday place in the historic centre will temporarily change function and become a kind of open-air urban theatre.
The Biennial has chosen to begin this edition by recovering a collective dimension of flamenco. Instead of strictly separating artists, stage and audience, the opening moves towards a more ritual idea: voices emerging from different points, a body responding from the centre and an audience integrated into the sound space.
This choice also connects with one of the main themes of the 24th edition: looking back at flamenco’s memory without turning it into an archaeological reconstruction. The 2026 programme recalls the century since the rise of the so-called Ópera Flamenca and combines that historical reflection with numerous premieres and contemporary languages.
Ecos primitivos therefore works as a declaration of intent: to open the Biennial by seeking older forms of transmission —romance, martinete, trilla, toná and saeta— but reorganised through contemporary staging designed for the city of today.
It is worth distinguishing between several dates because the opening of the 2026 Biennial can cause some confusion. 9 September is the official start with the sung proclamation in Plaza de San Francisco. However, the first major gala of the general programme will arrive the following day.
On Thursday, 10 September, at 9:30 pm, the Real Maestranza bullring will host El mundo por montera, a Noche Única bringing together José Mercé, José el de la Tomasa, Martirio, Arcángel, La Tremendita, Ángeles Toledano, El Perrete and Manuel de la Tomasa, as well as the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía with Patricia Guerrero. Artistic direction is by Andrés Marín and Luis Ybarra.
And on 11 September the programme moves fully into several of its major venues: Antonio Rey will perform at Espacio Turina, Sara Baras will premiere Infinita at Teatro de la Maestranza and Rosario La Tremendita will present Menos es más at Teatro Central.
The 2026 opening can therefore be understood as a sequence lasting several days: urban proclamation on the 9th, major gala on the 10th and the full theatre programme from the 11th.
Although 9 September is the official opening date, the public can enter the atmosphere of the Biennial from 2 September. The exhibition La noche azul opens that day at the Real Fábrica de Artillería, and between the 3rd and 6th several preliminary activities take place in Seville neighbourhoods and heritage venues.
