Since its creation, its programme has combined established figures with artists from newer generations and has spread performances across different venues in the Community of Madrid rather than concentrating all activity in a single theatre.

The 2026 edition develops a very clear central idea: women in flamenco. The theme “Flamencas” is more than just a title. The festival uses it as a guiding thread to revisit the contribution of female singers, dancers, guitarists, creators and professionals who have been decisive in the evolution of the art form.

The choice of Carmen Amaya as the image of the edition neatly sums up that intention. Her figure represents one of the deepest transformations in 20th-century flamenco dance and serves as the starting point for a programme that does not simply look to the past. Historical artists, fully established creators and younger names developing their own languages all share the bill.

The result is an especially broad edition: traditional singing, new dance dramaturgies, concert guitar, piano, flute, saxophone, harmonica and hybrid formats are spread across eleven stages. This diversity makes it possible to approach Suma Flamenca from very different perspectives, whether you are looking for a singing recital or prefer a contemporary stage proposal.

Full Suma Flamenca 2026 programme

The official website separates the programme into the preliminary Ateneo performances and the main block beginning on 13 October. The organisers announce 21 world premieres and 12 Madrid premieres. This is therefore not a festival based solely on reviving productions that have already toured: a significant part of the bill arrives as new work.

The world premieres include proposals from very different artistic profiles. Singer Argentina presents Madrid, Crisol Flamenco; Alicia Morales devotes a project to Antonio “El Mochuelo”; Gabriel Matías premieres Quitar lo superfluo; Antonio Serrano presents Más Flamenco que Jazz; Pedro El Granaíno premieres Dicen que para Cantar; and Israel Fernández closes the Teatros del Canal programme with a recital also announced as a world premiere.

In dance, the Madrid premieres provide an opportunity to see recent works by Andrés Marín, Adela Campallo, Karime Amaya, Jesús Carmona, Farruquito, Estévez & Paños and La Piñona. This decentralisation is one of the festival’s most interesting features, because Suma Flamenca is not simply a succession of performances at Teatros del Canal.

In Madrid city, the main hubs are the three halls at Teatros del Canal, the Teatro de La Abadía and the cultural centres Pilar Miró and Paco Rabal, both in Vallecas. The Ateneo hosts the preliminary sessions and performances linked to the “Flamencas” theme.

Outside the capital, each venue offers a different experience. Hearing flamenco guitar at the Royal Monastery of Santa María de El Paular, attending a gala at the Real Coliseo Carlos III in San Lorenzo de El Escorial or travelling to La Cabrera completely changes the context of the performance. If you are visiting Madrid specifically for the festival, these venues can also be a way to discover other parts of the region.

For visitors who prefer to stay in the capital and add more flamenco on other days of the trip, our guide to flamenco in Madrid brings together tablaos and shows running throughout the year.

Suma Flamenca Joven, the Ateneo and an exhibition in the Madrid Metro

The 2026 edition starts before 13 October. The programme makes it possible, for example, to see dance at Teatros del Canal one day and travel to Vallecas the next for a singing recital or instrumental proposal.

If you are travelling from outside Madrid, we recommend checking the performances with the highest demand first and buying those tickets before finalising the rest of your itinerary. Dates with very well-known artists can sell faster, while other venues offer very different capacities and conditions.

It is also worth checking the distance between venues. Two performances on the same date may be incompatible because of timing or travel, even if they look close on paper. Festival sessions begin at 18:00, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00 and 20:30, so there are overlaps on some days.

For anyone wanting several days of flamenco, a good strategy is to make Suma Flamenca performances the backbone of the trip and leave at least one evening free to visit a tablao. The festival shows an essential part of creative and concert flamenco; a tablao offers a different experience, more regular and focused on live performance at close range.

Our recommendation

Suma Flamenca 2026 is especially attractive for anyone who wants to see different ways of understanding flamenco in just a few days. The bill lets you move from the choreographic research of Israel Galván or Rocío Molina to traditional singing, hear concert guitar, attend premieres and discover young artists.

If you can attend only one performance, we would choose according to your main interest. For singing, Carmen Linares, Israel Fernández, Aurora Vargas and Pedro El Granaíno offer very different profiles. For dance, Patricia Guerrero, Rocío Molina, Farruquito, Karime Amaya and Israel Galván represent almost opposite stage languages. For guitar and instrumental work, Alejandro Hurtado, Jerónimo Maya, Chano Domínguez and Antonio Serrano broaden the experience considerably.

If you can spend several days, we recommend not concentrating everything at Teatros del Canal. A visit to La Abadía, Vallecas or one of the regional venues helps explain the territorial dimension that Suma Flamenca seeks to maintain.

And if your first-choice show sells out, that does not mean you have to miss flamenco in Madrid.
