Flamenco in Triana: a history still heard across the river<\/h2>\n

Triana is one of flamenco\u2019s great historic heartlands. Across the Guadalquivir, this old suburb of Seville brought together generations of Roma and non-Roma families, potters, blacksmiths, sailors and workers who made singing, dance and comp\u00e1s an everyday means of expression. Its name appears very early in flamenco\u2019s written sources and remains associated with styles, artists and approaches to performance that belong to the memory of arte jondo.<\/p>\n

But reducing it to the phrase \u2018Triana, birthplace of flamenco\u2019 would oversimplify a much richer history. Flamenco did not originate in a single neighbourhood or community: it took shape through exchanges between different parts of Andalusia. What distinguishes Triana is the intensity of its contribution and the continuity of its own flamenco identity, still recognisable in sole\u00e1, tangos, certain dance forms and, above all, a way of living the comp\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The short answer<\/h2>\n

Why is Triana so important to flamenco?<\/strong> It was one of the centres where flamenco took shape and was passed on during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Historical sources place festivities, dances and performers in Triana from very early dates. The Andalusian Flamenco Institute links the neighbourhood with essential forms such as sole\u00e1 de Triana<\/strong> and tangos de Triana<\/strong>. La Cava, communal courtyard housing, forges and patios are part of that memory.<\/p>\n

Flamenco no longer operates as it did in historic Triana, but the neighbourhood still offers professional performances of singing, dance and guitar.
