That distinction matters because the architecture will not simply act as a backdrop: it will be an active part of the performance.<\/p>\n<p>The production begins with a vertical concept. <strong>Five flamenco singers will occupy different balconies around the square<\/strong>, creating a sound map that surrounds the audience. Opposite those voices coming from above, Ana Morales will perform the choreography at street level, in the centre of the space.<\/p>\n<p>The Biennial describes the concept as a dialogue between <strong>cante above and dance on the ground<\/strong>. The contrast between voice and body, balconies and ground, memory and contemporary creation forms the visual and sonic axis of the entire opening.<\/p>\n<p>The result seeks to break with the usual relationship between stage and spectator. Her dance will not be an ornamental accompaniment to the cante: the choreography is conceived as the bodily response to the voices arriving from above.<\/p>\n<p>The organisers describe her approach through three principles: <strong>organic, bodily movement<\/strong>, <strong>fragmentation and reconstruction of gesture<\/strong> and a <strong>direct relationship with the ground as a symbolic space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That approach fits Morales\u2019s own career, in which she has continuously explored the relationship between flamenco tradition, contemporary language, space and the body. It is one of the great historic spaces in the city centre, beside the City Hall and directly connected with Plaza Nueva and Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Ecos primitivos<\/em>, the fa\u00e7ades and balconies will not merely serve as scenery. The architecture will make it possible to build the performance vertically and distribute the voices around the audience. Instead of strictly separating artists, stage and audience, the opening moves towards a more ritual idea: voices emerging from different points, a body responding from the centre and an audience integrated into the sound space.<\/p>\n<p>This choice also connects with one of the main themes of the 24th edition: looking back at flamenco\u2019s memory without turning it into an archaeological reconstruction. The 2026 programme recalls the century since the rise of the so-called \u00d3pera Flamenca and combines that historical reflection with numerous premieres and contemporary languages.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ecos primitivos<\/em> therefore works as a declaration of intent: to open the Biennial by seeking older forms of transmission \u2014romance, martinete, trilla, ton\u00e1 and saeta\u2014 but reorganised through contemporary staging designed for the city of today.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_huge\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>The 9th is the official opening, but the major gala arrives on the 10th<\/h2>\n<p>It is worth distinguishing between several dates because the opening of the 2026 Biennial can cause some confusion. <strong>9 September is the official start<\/strong> with the sung proclamation in Plaza de San Francisco. However, the first major gala of the general programme will arrive the following day.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Thursday, 10 September, at 9:30 pm<\/strong>, the Real Maestranza bullring will host <em>El mundo por montera<\/em>, a Noche \u00danica bringing together Jos\u00e9 Merc\u00e9, Jos\u00e9 el de la Tomasa, Martirio, Arc\u00e1ngel, La Tremendita, \u00c1ngeles Toledano, El Perrete and Manuel de la Tomasa, as well as the Ballet Flamenco de Andaluc\u00eda with Patricia Guerrero.
